Common Stinkhorn (Phallus impudicus)

The common stinkhorn (Phallus impudicus) is a fungus belonging to the genus Phallus, commonly known as a stinkhorn or devil's fingers. It is an unusual plant that has been used in various cultures since ancient times due to its potential health benefits. Today, extracts from the stinkhorn are increasingly found in dietary supplements and natural cosmetics. This fungus is widespread in Europe, North America, and Eastern countries such as China, India, and Taiwan. It is most commonly found in deciduous forests from July to September.

Despite its strong odor, it is not poisonous and the inner layers of the young fungus can be eaten raw, having a radish-like taste and a crisp texture. This fungus is particularly popular in France, sold fresh or pickled, and is also used in sausages in Germany.

According to historical sources, in Lithuania this fungus was most often eaten raw with sour cream, seasoned with salt and pepper, and was also used for tinctures and infusions with vodka or wine, as well as dried for winter. In medieval Germany, this fungus was used as a remedy for gout, and in northern Montenegro, bulls were rubbed with a solution of this fungus before a bullfight to make them stronger.
